    Statement
If an aspect of drawing from life is marking the boundary between space and form, I am interested in the potential for ambiguity in this relationship and in exploring it in multiple ways.

The source material for most of my work is the mediaeval villages of France and Spain, and the limestone quarries of Provence, which are strongly geometric in character. In large drawings I use pencil with liquid media so that paint and line are built up in transparent layers. Although these images convey a suggestion of formal and spatial construction, fluctuations between recessive space and the flatness of the surface means that the logic of this can never be fully grasped. My interest in transparency derives from my training as an architect; but whereas in architectural drawing the surface is strictly readable, as an artist I am interested in a more complex perception of form and space in which a tension exists between solid and void.

In addition to traditional graphic media, I draw freehand on computer and Ipad, as well as with CAD and on top of photographs. I also develop themes from my drawings in other fine art media, such as painting and etching.
