Susan Michie

Based in Devon, Susan Michie began her career as a film editor before going on to study at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. Her practice consists of large-scale abstract drawings, and photographs of natural forms such as bones.

Her work has been included in several group shows (Art First, London, 2008/13; Bend in the River, Lincs., 2005/12; Atrium Gallery, Bournemouth, Dorset, 2006), and she has had solo exhibitions at the Hospital Club, London in 2014 and at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University in 2010.

    Statement
Textile, script and natural forms are primary sources of reference. Although colour occasionally finds its way into my drawings, it usually feels like a distraction – black on white has an endless appeal for me. Patterns are created from repeated dots or lines that spread across the paper and build up the image slowly and organically. The patterns have an affinity with the way cells, whether mineral, plant or animal, develop into their final form. The simplest of beginnings can have a complex outcome.

Although I always work within a carefully considered set of measurements, the aim is not about creating a perfectly balanced image. Mistakes, uneven lines, clumps and clusters etc., are flaws that can occur naturally and are key to the drawing process.
