Eleanor Wood

Eleanor Wood studied at Winchester School of Art and Chelsea School of Art and is based in Norfolk, where the expanses of fields, skies and vast open beaches that edge the North Sea all influence and shape her work. In 2002 she moved to central California, working and exhibiting there for 14 years before returning to East Anglia in 2017.

Selected group exhibitions include an Arts Council touring exhibition, ‘On Paper’ (2018–19), Jerwood Drawing Prize touring exhibition (2017–18), ‘British Invasion’ at The Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, California (2107), and ‘Reunion’ at ANDLAB, Los Angeles (2016). Solo exhibitions include ‘Eleanor Wood: Realignments – Works on Paper’, Don Soker Contemporary Art, San Francisco, CA (2016), and ‘Profound Subtlety: New work by Eleanor Wood’, JayJay Contemporary Fine Art, Sacramento, CA (2015). Her work is held in the collections of the Arts Council England, The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco’s Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, The Crocker Museum, Sacramento, and The Progressive Arts collection, Cleveland Ohio, among others. Recent awards include the Winsor and Newton Prize, the London Group Open (2015).

    Statement
Eleanor Wood’s reductive works on paper lay a trail to artistic predecessors such as Agnes Martin, Edda Renouf and those associated with minimalist and post-minimalist practices. In many of the drawings colour is applied in a highly diluted form in layers, using both watercolour and oil stick, on to both the back and front of the paper, allowing the materials to soak through and causing the central geometric motif (usually a square or circle) to appear to float above its surround. This close relationship between the two sides of the paper is reinforced by lines and pinpricks scoured into the surface. The tension between control and ambiguity in Wood’s method contributes to a highly nuanced set of allusions: emphasis on the horizontal establishes a tight structure and order, while the blurring of colour and lines around the central image creates effects that are more indistinct, organic and spatial. At the same time, the delicacy and modest physical scale of the works provoke a sense of intimacy that invites close inspection of their subtlety and precision.
